Here's a question for educators who've had it with the permanent exhaustion...

What’s the difference between the school staff that actually find moments for themselves day-to-day, and the ones stuck in 'just push through til the holidays' mode?

Likely guesses include…

➡️ ...that niggling belief that self-care is selfish, with maybe a sneaking suspicion that you don't really deserve it.

➡️ ...being worn down by the all too pervasive message that an endless dance with burnout is ‘just the way it is’ for staff in schools.

➡️ ...feeling isolated and stuck, unsure where to even begin thinking about doing things differently.

➡️ …overthinking a hundred possible next steps that the internet / your neighbour / some random in your cousin's office is 100% sure will absolutely help

➡️ ...listening to that inner voice endlessly grumbling "you just don't have the willpower to stick with healthy habits"

(spoiler alert - it's not a willpower problem!)

Fortunately for you, I've got just the thing!

Inside this community, you’ll uncover how to tune out all the ‘you should [blah blah celery juice will fix your life]’ noise and focus on the next right steps for YOU.

Hiya, I’m Becca Benning 👋🏻

Let me tell you what I know about you…

  • You’re have more control over your life than you think
  • You absolutely have the power to feel better - in ways that come with zero dicey side-effects.

How do I know? From my last five+ years as a Functional Health Coach, working with autoimmune clients and educators just like you.

Plus, when it comes to personal experience, I spent a decade working in schools myself, followed by another decade (and more) improving my health one step at a time after the diagnosis of my first autoimmune disease, multiple sclerosis* - eventually led to me leaving the classroom.

* For those unfamiliar with MS, it’s a neurodegenerative autoimmune condition where the immune system attacks the brain and spinal cord, so the symptoms can be wide ranging - and often pretty scary.

From 'increasing disability’ to 'cumulative improvement'

As you may have heard me talk about before if you've been around here a while, when I was about to turn 40, I was 3 years out of primary teaching.

After a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis at 36, I'd wrestled for a little while with whether or not I could continue to just push on...because that's what teachers do!

Ultimately, I realised I had no idea how to take proper care of myself while working in education - and to be honest I doubted it was even possible.

My brain health was at stake, which made the risks feel unacceptably high - so I went.

Small sidebar for a short rant!

How have we reached a point where it has become 'normal' in any job to push ourselves beyond our limits to that extent?! Systemic, big scale change is obviously necessary, as since I left things have got worse, not better.

Wellbeing for staff in education is at an all time low, so we can't afford to wait for the powers that be to get things moving in a constructive direction. Urgent help is needed for all of you in the system right now - and struggling.

Cut back to me at almost 40 - ditching my in many ways loved, but also super-stressful job had helped (no more Sunday headaches!), but I was still tired. More tired than I should be.

At my annual review, my neurologist looked me right in the eye and told me that I was on what he called ‘a trajectory of increasing disability’ - not a motto I was keen to adopt!

Basically he meant that I wasn't fully recovering between relapses, so each one was leaving me a little worse off than I'd been before.

That was the push I needed to start learning about what I could do to help myself, alongside and beyond the medical options I was being offered.

To be clear, I'm not anti-medication. I take several for various things (my laundry list of autoimmune and other chronic conditions is looooong).

Having said that, I haven’t yet needed any of the big ‘disease modifying drugs’ for my MS - though that option does remain on the table if my situation changes significantly.

What changed the game for me - and has taken my trajectory from 'increasing disability' as I turned 40, to continuing cumulative improvements as I approach 50 - was not any kind of quick ‘just do x’ fix.

It was (and is) the ever-evolving collection of small positive routines and habits that are now ingrained in my day-to-day life.

Sure, some of the steps I took felt bigger than others, but I definitely didn’t build the lifestyle I have now overnight. I certainly could have moved faster if I'd known health coaches existed back then!

As soon as I saw the power of taking small steps - and how it could be amplified with skilled support - I knew I needed to get the word out and start sharing it with people just like you - which is why I set up my coaching business back in 2020.

Since then I've continued to work on my own healing process, alongside supporting a whole drawer full of wonderful clients to do the same (old-school paper files habits die hard around here 😉).

If you could use some help starting your own collection of feel-good behaviours, and learning how to make them stick - you’re in exactly the right place!

What clients are saying...

Becca is a very compassionate and qualified teacher whose personal journey makes her the ideal coach for anyone suffering from autoimmune conditions. ... A very special coach!"

Claudia

“Becca helped me to learn to administer a bit of self-compassion...she had an amazing ability to really attune herself to my position and help articulate the muddle in my head. It was wonderful and I looked forward to that “me time” each week so much.”

Araxie

I found working with Becca easy and light. ...as a result of my work with Becca, I have managed to create a programme of well being and good health, creatively organise the space in my home, and restructure my relationship with my partner. I am enjoying time to myself and have reconnected with my creative side, generally really enjoying my own company.

Questions educators ask before saying “Heck Yes!” to the ⚖️ Realistic Self-Care Collective ⚖️

Remember those school staff actually able to find those moments for themselves on the daily?

That can be you!

Obviously you have a few options:

1 - Stay the course you’re on - no point pretending that’s not on the menu! You don’t have to even dip your toe in these waters if the future you’re headed for feels just dandy* (though I’m guessing it doesn’t if you’ve read this far).

* the watery acronym for my Signpost, Explore, Adapt, Sustain ® framework isn’t an accident - so brace yourself for regular aquatic metaphors 🌊😉

2 - Set sail solo - cobbling together what you can learn from the ocean of free resources available online, and muddling your way through (which is what I did for years, before I even knew health coaching was a thing!). It's definitely slower, probably quite a bit lonlier, and likely more frustrating - but it’s obviously not impossible.

3 - Join us to build and float a friendly fleet together. Gather your supplies, chart a course to your personal destination, and set out towards a future you’re choosing - not the one any new government education initiative has mapped out for you.

(Also comes with a small crew ready to sail by your side, as well as an experienced navigator to guide the way - that’ll be me 👋🏻)

What clients are saying...

Becca's knowledge and empathy made me feel very safe, a feeling that doesn’t come easily to me, so that made it possible to go deep.

The grounding exercise I learned is clearly one I will use daily or whenever it’s needed. The signpost exercise has shifted my thinking and planning so much. I used to be very overwhelmed when to do lists grew too long but now it’s all very clear and manageable."

P.S. - check out my 2023 TEDx for more on my personal experience with this approach

(Yes, I do have mic packs in both pockets 😂 I was second to last on the day and the sound peeps were soooo pleased I had somewhere to put them!)
